Syndicate is the third game in the Syndicate series. It is a reboot of the series as opposed to a sequel to 1996's Syndicate Wars, and was released on 21 February 2012 in North America and 24 February 2012 in Europe, for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. The game is set a century before the events of the original Syndicate and deals with the rise of EuroCorp to global dominance, in a story written by English author Richard K. Morgan. Syndicate uses a proprietary graphics engine created by Starbreeze and used in their earlier Chronicles of Riddick games.

Story

2069 – no longer governed by politicians, the developed world is divided up into regions controlled by mega-corporations known as syndicates. These syndicates have revolutionised how the consumer interacts with the digital world. No longer does the consumer require a device to access the world’s data and control their technology, they can do this at the blink of an eye via neural chip implant.

Civilians flocked to be 'chip'd' and enjoy all that their selected syndicate has to offer; housing, medical, banking, insurance, education, entertainment and jobs. One complete package. One complete lifestyle. In return, the syndicates gained unprecedented insights, and control, over the individual and their behaviour. With little governmental oversight, business has become war. The syndicates will stop at nothing for ultimate market dominance.

At the front line of this war are the agents, the syndicate's bio-engineered and chip-augmented enforcers. They can breach anything in the wired dataverse including their enemies, their weapons and the environment that surrounds them, making them the most efficient and deadly technological weapons in the world. Take on the role of Miles Kilo, EuroCorp's latest prototype agent, and embark on a brutal action adventure of corruption and revenge.

Gameplay

The game is a first-person shooter, and from what has been so far it can be ascertained that there are several unique gameplay elements. Firstly, there is the concept of an offset iron sight on weapons, which allows precision aiming at closer ranges where the top scope would be unwieldy to use. Secondly, there is the breaching mechanic where, similar to the Persuadertron of the older games, the player can hack into the chip'd minds of enemies and cause their weapon to backfire, persuade them to assist the player or even force them to commit suicide. Lastly, there is the ability to use the chip to slow down the player's perception of time.

There will also be a four-player co-operative campaign, where players can team up to complete nine missions re-imagined from the original Syndicate game. These will be separate from the single-player campaign, and in this mode you not working for EuroCorp but instead fighting against them for a rival syndicate.

Applications

Applications are abilities built into a chip that allow the user to interact with electronic devices, and can be both offensive and defensive. In the co-operative mode, upgrades can be unlocked using tokens earnt by defeating certain enemies. Once unlocked they can be researched by earning XP, and when the research is complete the upgrade will automatically take effect.

Weapons

Various weapons can be picked up throughout the game, with the player able to carry two at a time. Some weapons such as the minigun can be picked up in addition to the carried two, but to switch to another weapon they must be dropped first. In the co-operative mode, upgrades can be unlocked using tokens earnt by defeating certain enemies. Once unlocked they can be researched by earning XP, and when the research is complete the upgrade will automatically take effect.

As it is built on the same game engine, the game's texture files can be extracted using existing tools designed for The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.
